Martin Parr Martin Parr has composed an album of images that illustrates beach life at different times and places. During his travels, he has also used many different cameras. During the 1970s he used an early black and white photography Leica M3 with a 35mm lens. In the 1980s he had an onboard flash in the daytime with medium format. Halfway through the decade, he switched to the last resort in 1985 makina plaubel with a 55mm lens up until the mid-2000s. At this time Parr switches to digital. In 2017, Parr experiments extensively using a wider angle with the telephoto. Last year he used a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. The album shows images of just about everything you think will happen on a beach. From people splashing around in the water to people in full body clothing and boots sitting back and enjoying an ice cold beer. Cindy Sherman is an American photographer best known for her conceptual portraits. The most important thing you need to know about Sherman is that she photographs herself as the character to all of her photographs. She uses herself to portray identity stereotypes. She focused a lot on the lighting of the photos and the facial expression. This is evident in her photos, for example, the book I picked up “Early Work of Cindy Sherman,” she is very obvious about the shadows she wants, where she wants them and also the expressions on the characters tell a lot about who they are. This book is a series of “bus rider” depictions. Many of her early works were in black and white and with very minimalistic backgrounds.                The artist I chose to imitate is Bernhard Fuchs. He was born in 1971, in upper Austria and has studied under both Timm Rautert and Bernd Becher from 1993-1999. The pictures in this book are of the areas around his home land of Helfenberg and were taken between 2004 and 2007. Fuchs said “What I feel in front of this landscape eludes direct representation because it belongs totally to my inner experience.”   These photos serve to show his return to home and help establish that his memories of home are what drive his passion for his other works of photography along with his present life. He uses these photos to show how humans have intruded upon nature, but they also show that they almost seem as though they have always belonged there. Corinne Silva ( Garden State ) Corinne Silva, author of her photographic novel Garden State , is a London based photographer and videographer born in Leeds, England. Since her early exposure to photography, she has consistently reflected her particular fascination with botany in relation to cultural/political backgrounds in her works. Dr. Silva earned her bachelor's degree in photography at the Nottingham Trent University, and continued on to earn her master’s in photography at University of Brighton, and eventually a P.H.D. in photography at University of the Arts London’s (UAL)–London College of Communication in 2014. Close at Hand is a collection of photographs by Mariana Cook, it was crafted with the goal to take a picture for every day in a year. Mariana focuses primarily on the meager, avoiding grandiose subjects and focusing on more “simple” subjects. What the subjects lack in grandeur they make up for through complexity. Cook utilizes black and white photography for the entirety of this collection, this is a distinct trait of the collection that I think was chosen to avoid the distraction of color. In the images devoid of color there is more contrast which allows for a more stark image that draws the eye. The images are close cropped and either leave very little space between the subject and the edge of the photograph, or have the subject take up the entire space. This collection is about taking seemingly ordinary objects and photographing them in a way that displays their complexity in an abstract way that challenges the assumption that it is even simple.     HENRY WESSEL     American Photographer, Henry Wessel, has displayed various images of western America that have offered a different element to the photography world. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, Wessel did not discover his love for photography until he began studying at the Pennsylvania State University where he came upon some photography books that struck his interest, and brought him back to his interest in psych.     Even as he became more successful, Wessel strictly used one camera and one type of film his entire career. Using a Leica 33mm camera with a 28mm wide angle lense and Kodak Tri-X film, he produced elegant and simplistic photos. Rooting from his love of psychology, many of his works are like rorschach test—focusing on what your mind can create using black and white. He uses shadows to act as physical objects.
